In this post we will be looking at the Mage, and how this fragile yet extremely lethal class evolves into either the deadly Sorcerer, or the summoner mage Spiritmaster.
Like every other starter class in Aion, race doesn’t affect the class you choose. Whether you pick Elyos or Asmodian ,the Mage class is one that you might recognize from other MMOs. It is one of the four archetypes that seem to be in almost every MMO, the others being Scout, Warrior, and Healer.
Combat
Mages happen to be one of the easiest starter classes to level because of their powerful magic. Very often you can kill a mob before it even reaches a close enough distance to swipe at you. Always keep in mind that you are a glass cannon, though. If you are far enough away from your enemy you are capable of raining destruction, but as soon as they get too close there is a good chance you will break and fall apart. Luckily you are equipped with spells that help you get out of tight situations.
Levels 1-3
You can’t be a mage without the appropriate fireball spell. As soon as you enter the
world of Aion, you managed to master the Flame Bolt, a spell which shoots out a fireball for a good amount of damage. You also know Restraint, a spell that roots your target in place for a certain amount of time; perfect when you agro a nosy mob. The cooldown for Restraint is 60 seconds, so make sure you check your surroundings before going in to fight, and keep the spell in mind when fighting a group of enemies.
You’ll reach level three in no time as mobs early in the game have nothing but fear in their eyes when a flame bolt hurls towards them. Sometimes that’s not enough, so at level three you learn Ice Chain, a spell which does an initial amount of damage as well as slows the enemy’s movement for 12 seconds. This should be the first spell in your rotation, because a slowed mob lets you pull off more spells before it eventually reaches you -- if you don’t kill it before then.
Levels 4-6
Once you’ve broiled and frozen all the mobs in the area you’ll be level five, where you learn the Blaze and Erosion spells. Blaze happens to be the second chain spell activated after performing Flame Bolt. The spell is instant cast, and deals a good amount of quick damage, as well as lowering the magical resistance of the mob by a certain amount. This combo is a great way to dwindle the HP of the mob by a significant amount, so don’t be too conservative on your mana when killing the enemy is your number one priority.
Erosion is your first DoT (Damage over Time) spell that you get as a mage. It does an initial small amount of damage, followed by extra damage every few seconds for 15 seconds. A worthy spell that helps you add a bit of extra damage when casting your other spells; no harm in adding this to your rotation.
Levels 7-9
At level seven you learn another spell that becomes the second ability in a chain:
Frozen Shock. Frozen Shock deals a good burst of initial damage on top of stunning the target for a few moments. Activated after using Ice Chain, this one-two combo is great at keeping your enemy far from you, giving you the chance to maintain distance and nuke from afar. At level seven you also learn the invaluable Stone Skin spell, which protects you with a magical barrier that is capable of absorbing a good amount of damage. It does have a two minute cooldown, so it would be wise to use it when the enemy gets too close or you find yourself facing more enemies than you previously thought.
Level nine gives you the chance to learn your final spell before becoming a Daeva: Energy Absorption. With a cooldown of only one minute, this spell allows you to regain a small amount of your MP instantly. Not terribly useful, but when the dungeon boss is at a sliver of life and you are the only one remaining, getting that extra boost in MP might just be enough to take the boss down yourself.
