From the game publisher, Blizzard has denied banning Linux users for anything except for cheating. Since the Diablo III launches, the related rumors never stopped spreading.
In a variety of forums and on reddit, there comes a new complaint about the game: gamers who are playing on Linux using Wine to run the game are forbidden to play for no reason and not having their purchase refunded.
Of course, we will see this rumor comes very suspiciously. It turns to be OK when tens of thousands of other Linux users play the game. Why it has problem on these small number of players? We need to know that the small number of complaints doesn't make sense when compared to the large number of normal Linux players who do not have any problems.
About this, Blizzard has given such a response that is similar to what has been posted on their forums:
“Playing the game on Linux (although not officially supported) and/or using Wine will not result in being diablo 3 gold banned, but cheating will, ” a company spokesperson said so. “We’ve extensively tested various scenarios related to this situation, including replicating system setups for those who have posted claiming they were banned unfairly, and have not found any situations where players were banned solely for using Linux or Wine. ”
This accident seems just a rumor or a case of user error. As usual, most of Linux users will be very smart when they are playing games, but which doesn’t mean they can always do everything right.
We believe that the Blizzard is telling everything true and there is no reason for this rumor to be spread any farther.
