Trion worlds used their 5 days of headstart launch to fix several in game issues, and it seems they also used that time to devise a plan about how to handle the massive influx of players Rift is receiving. The only real knock on Rift thus far has been the lengthy server queues that dogged the first 5 days of gameplay, and many wondered how these same servers would handle the crushing weight of those that didn’t pre-order – the simple answer from Trion: they won’t have to. In a bold move 31 new servers went live this morning for players just entering the game and for an hour they were the only servers available as the headstart servers went into lock down.
While many of the headstart players were upset about not being able to play for an hour (perish the thought that they may want to sleep, shower, eat or maybe even go outside), the overwhelming sentiment was that this was a pro move and showed a nice bit of planning by the devs. The only potential downside could come in a few months if players don’t re-up their subscriptions and the shards become ghost towns, but I have a sneaking suspicion that won’t be the case.
