As more and more information about Final Fantasy XIV’s structure and storyline is being released to the public and applications are beginning to be accepted for the Beta- It’s not too soon to be thinking about the official launch. Though the exact date is unannounced, I’m sure that logging on to your brand new character as one of the first on your server will be filled with experiences that will stick with you throughout your stay in Eorzea.
The initial player base is sure to be diverse. The news of what people are calling a "Next-Gen MMO" will spread like wildfire and bring in all sorts of gamers. FFXI players making the switch will most likely be in the minority surrounded by gamers of various other MMOs. The fact that FFXIV will be releasing for a mainstream video game console on release day is sure to entice many casual gamers to make FFXIV their first MMO too.
With all these players bringing in a wide variety of video game experience, there will be some interesting social interactions taking place. Former Final Fantasy XI players will likely seek out their LS mates, first person shooter aficionados who joined because of the availability of FFXIV on a gaming console will likely be trying to figure out the MMO world, and when you add in the fact that there will be various languages being spoken all at once; things might get a bit hectic. However, since FFXIV is incorporating a much more strategic element into combat, this chaotic mix of video game backgrounds should give rise to the creation of ingenious tactics. Just imagine what sick and twisted methods of destruction would be devised if you put a Maple Story veteran and Modern Warfare: 2 gamer in the same party. I feel sorry for any Cactuars standing in their way.
I would expect to see a fair amount of variation in the pursuits of players during the beginning moments of the game. There are many who have been quite taken with the idea of starting a craft right away to secure a steady income for their character. While this is a very good idea, others will take upon the task of becoming one of the first to reach end game. There will probably be others still- myself included- who will aim for one of the previous objectives and end up not being able to resist the urge to run out into the farthest reaches of Eorzea and explore the game for all its worth. There are countless other missions people have in mind for when they first play Final Fantasy XIV, and I’m sure that no matter what, the phrase "giddy with excitement" will be applicable to all.
While most of this is merely speculation, there is one thing I know for certain. My first few days of playing an MMO are by far my favourite. While trying to figure out your new environment, there exists within you a curiosity that a good MMO never fails to encourage. The ability to become whatever you want and to explore a new world with newfound companions is unique and rewarding. Final Fantasy XIV is poised to offer this experience and more, and I know that I will be one of those giddy with excitement as I explore the world of Eorzea when it makes its debut.
